Load changes the test ride

An empty demo bike tells you almost nothing about how the same frame behaves with forty pounds over the rear axle. Ask to ride with weight in the rack before committing.

A bike carrying forty pounds of groceries is a different machine from the one you rode in the shop. The load sits high and behind you, the steering goes light, and every start from rest asks the motor for something it was not asked for on the empty test ride. That is where the choice between a rear hub, a front hub and a mid-drive stops being a specification line and starts being the thing you notice twice a day, on the pull away from the crosswalk and again on the ramp up to your street.

Hill starts with weight on the back

A mid-drive turns the cranks, so it works through your gears, and that is the whole difference on a loaded hill start: shift down and the motor gets the same mechanical advantage your legs get, which means it can move a heavy bike from a dead stop on a grade without straining. A rear hub motor drives the wheel directly and has one ratio forever, so on a steep restart it pulls hard, gets hot, and asks for a running start you may not have at a light. Front hubs are gentler still, and with the load at the back the front tire has the least weight on it, which is exactly when it slips.

On flat and rolling ground the gap narrows sharply. A decent rear hub with a load aboard feels calm, quiet and untroubled, and the mid-drive's advantage shows up only where gradients are real. A careful reader works out which of those two descriptions matches the route home before reading any more spec sheets.

The flat tire you will eventually have

Consider what happens when the rear tire goes down half a mile from the house with the panniers full. On a mid-drive, the rear wheel comes out the way any bicycle wheel comes out, because there is no motor in it and no cable running to it, and you can hand it to a shop that has never seen an electric bike before. On a rear hub bike, the wheel is the motor: it is heavy, it has a cable that must be unplugged or routed carefully, and the axle usually sits in torque washers that need the right sequence going back in. Front hub bikes split the difference, since the rear wheel stays conventional and the front one, when it punctures, is the lighter one to wrestle.

What each layout wears out

Everything a mid-drive gains by using your gears, it pays for through the chain, the chainring and the cassette, because motor torque and leg torque both land on the same small teeth. Loaded riders on mid-drives replace chains noticeably sooner and learn to ease off the pedals through a shift, which becomes automatic within a week. A hub motor bypasses the drivetrain entirely, so the chain wears at roughly the pace it would on an unassisted bike, and the parts are the ordinary inexpensive ones. Brakes are the other half of the account: a heavy bike with a heavy load needs real hydraulic discs and pads you can source locally, whichever motor is fitted.

How the bike reads your legs at every light

A cadence sensor only knows whether the cranks are turning, so it waits a fraction of a revolution, then delivers a set amount of power regardless of effort. With a loaded bike in stop-start traffic that lag is the thing riders complain about: a pause, then a surge, then a soft cut when you stop pedaling to coast toward a stop sign. A torque sensor measures how hard you are pushing and scales assistance to that, so it comes in immediately, in proportion, and it makes a heavy bike feel like a normal one. The Consumer Product Safety Commission oversees bicycle and electric bicycle product safety in the United States, and predictable power delivery at low speed is not a small part of that picture.

What to check before you buy

Ride the bike loaded, not empty. Put a case of water or a bag of sand in the rack, stop halfway up the steepest hill you can find, and restart. Then stand the bike on its side in the shop and ask the mechanic to take the driven wheel out while you watch, timing nothing but noticing how many hands it takes. Ask what a chain and cassette cost, and whether the sensor is cadence or torque, since sellers often name the motor and skip the sensor entirely.

Both layouts carry shopping well when they are matched to the terrain and the sensor is honest about your effort. The hills and the flat tire decide it.
